Who's the captain of the English Dogs Cricket Team? Gnasher Hussein

By Emdad Rahman

We all know that the Aussies have recently suffered a so called ‘blip.’ Pundits said that the loss in the 20/20 series against the Poms, followed by Somerset, and the greatest result ever, being steamrolled by Bangladesh.

This led nicely onto the Ashes where Freddie and hacker Pietersen saved the day, very late in the day.

Theories have been doing the rounds at record pace as fans and pundits alike tried to decipher this shoddy and lacklustre form. Others urged the Aussies to unearth a new hero, especially with the great Shane Warne entering the twilight of his legendary career. Just who was going to revive the once mighty Aussies and return them to the pinnacle of world cricket?

As the picture below shows, the answer was obvious, there all along and never in doubt.

Acid Attack! Violence against women

E-mail Print PDF

Bangladesh is not just the world's most densely populated country. It holds another far more macabre record for the highest number of women disfigured in acid attacks. Crimes involving the use of corrosive acid to disfigure and sometimes kill young women are alarmingly common. The growing number of acid assaults in Bangladesh reflects an epidemic of gender violence and is a reaction to women's advancing economic and social status. Emdad Rahman investigates.

Unicef Definition of an acid attack…

’In an acid attack, a man throws acid (the kind found in car batteries) on the face of a girl or woman. Any number of reasons can lead to acid attacks. A rejected marriage proposal is offered as justification for a man to disfigure a woman with acid.’

Eid in Europe: A celebration for the Young and Old

E-mail Print PDF
The word Eid is an Arabic name to mean a festivity, a celebration, a recurring happiness, and a feast. In Islam, there are two major Eids namely Eid Al Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast) celebrating the end of Ramadhan and Eid al Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) which coincides with the Hajj and commemorates prophet Abraham’s sacrifice of a sheep in place of prophet Ishmael.

Each Eid is a Thanksgiving Day where the Muslims assemble in a brotherly and joyful atmosphere to offer their gratitude to Allah for helping them to fulfil their spiritual obligations prior to Eid. This form of thanksgiving is not confined to spiritual devotion and verbal expressions. It goes far beyond that to manifest itself in a handsome shape of social and humanitarian spirit.

Roommates: Dream or Nightmare?

Johnny sums up a roommate who thought it funny to sharpen knives every night, staring at me while doing so and muttering, ‘soon, soon.’ Hell, it could have been worse The perfect students room

By Emdad Rahman

The academic year can’t be grinding to a halt can it?

It's been a few years since I've had roommates, and I'm beginning to remember why.
This is a tribute to the quintessential roommates we have all hated, loved and reminisce about. Here’s to the slobs, the blobs, the bums and the annoyingly on-the-ball people we’ve spent some long years with.

Forget Tony, George is the king of Teflon

E-mail Print PDF

Now let's look at the Iraqi war. We can assume for the sake of argument that George W. Bush and his Texan friends are keen to get their hands upon Iraq's oil wealth. That would explain why they were so keen to go to war and overthrow Saddam. But what about the Shiite majority? The invasion and conquest was the easy part. The occupation, installing a puppet government that DOESN'T represent the fanatical Shiite majority, is the impossible part.

It’s looking like Gorgeous George is being directed towards the GALLOWAYS: You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to see that the whole sorry farce involving Norm Coleman and the US senate “scoop” on Galloway has a funny smell to it.

As David Blair, the journalist who 'found' the documents which suggested that Galloway was making money under the Oil For Food programme, pointed out at the time, the chances of someone planting the documents on the off chance that a British journalist would find them seems incredibly far-fetched. In other words it was a good-old fashioned scoop. Pardon my ignorance but am I naïve in assuming that precise news media/journalism would ensure that another acquiescent source would have been called for?- especially with something such as this convenient little exclusive dropping into the Telegraph's lap or with the documents having rather odd aberrations attached to them.

More timid MPs might have backed down long ago in the face of the disapproval his pro-Iraq campaign has attracted. But for Mr Galloway, it is only the latest in a long run of political controversy he has courted. He almost seems to enjoy it.
